Tips on text searching
You can search the First Call database by specifying text in several combinations of keywords to find a match in research reports. You can access this feature from the Advanced Search form as follows:

  1. Click the Advanced Search tab and then select the product(s) you want to search.
  2. Click Next.
  3. In the Select Criterion box, click and select Free Text from the list.
  4. Type the text you are searching for in the Text box.
  5. Click in the Match box and select on of the following options:

    		Free text - search for reports containing ONE OR MORE of the words specified. The least frequent terms are assigned the greatest weight for computing relevance.
    All words - search for reports that contain ALL of the words specified.
    Any words - search for reports that contain ANY ONE of the words specified.
    Phrase - matches only the EXACT words in the order specified.
  6. Click in the Sort By field to specify whether the results are ordered by Relevance or by Date.

Below are examples of combining text search with additional criteria:

Free text search example:

  • Text example: Convertibles for currency and price

  • Additional search criteria: Industry: Aerospace

  • Results: Headlines of documents and notes about the aerospace industry that contain one or more of these words: Convertibles, currency, price.

All words search example:

  • Text example: Convertibles for currency and price

  • Additional search criteria: Broker: Goldman Sachs; Country: Argentina

  • Results: Each headline is from a Goldman Sachs document or note with country index Argentina, that contain all of the words Convertibles AND currency AND price.

Any word search example:

  • Text example: Convertibles for currency and price

  • Additional search criteria: Industry: Coal; Subject: New Issues

  • Results: Headlines of documents and notes about new issues in the coal industry that contain any one of the words Convertibles OR currency OR price.

Phrase search example:

  • Text example: Convertibles for currency and price

  • Additional search criteria: Broker: Merrill Lynch

  • Results: Headlines of documents and notes sent by Merrill Lynch where there is a match with the complete phrase: Convertibles for currency and price.

As shown in these examples, you can use the text search in conjunction with other search variables, such as a broker or subject, to get more precise results.

The results are returned with a relevance value. The relevance scale indicates how well the words you entered matched those in the documents in the First Call database. If you choose Sort by Relevance, the documents are listed in descending order of relevance (best matches first).
